**Title**: Don’t tread on us: The psychology of bargaining in interpersonal and inter-group relations

 **Abstract**:

Conflicts of interest are rampant among organisms. The asymmetric war of attrition, a model of conflict in theoretical biology, models the optimal decision making of an agent in conflict with another when their respective interests and power can vary. 'Solving' the AWA involves what can be construed as a bargaining psychology: a psychology that bargains for a preferred standard of treatment from others. Importantly, the dynamics of the AWA are agnostic to whether the contest is between individuals or between groups of individuals. Thus, for a species like humans with an ancestral history of group living and inter-group conflict, there are likely adaptations in our social cognition for both inter-personal and inter-group bargaining. I will present evidence that this psychology is implicated in diverse phenomena, from laboratory measures of third party punishment to the outrage experienced when someone retorts "All Lives Matter"
